    @thedamon Mac Mini, local media (populated via SSH) played using VLC. Not pretty, but flexible, reliable, and (relatively) inexpensive.

      @thedamon I tried NFS and CIFS shares (both ways) and DLNA-type servers and players (want an Asus OPlay?) with mixed results.
